Trouble installing Norton security software

It's great that you've decided to install Norton Antivirus on your computer. Sorry the installation isn't going smoothly. Use these suggestions for downloading the CenturyLink Installer, removing multiple copies of your Norton subscription and managing a potential computer infection to solve the problem.

Troubleshoot a bad install

To use your Norton Antivirus subscription, you must first download the CenturyLink Installer. If you've run into a problem downloading the installer, try the following:

  1. Verify you meet the minimum system requirements.
  2. Download the latest version of Microsoft .Net Framework.
  3. Uninstall all instances of the CenturyLink Installer (or Qwest Installer) from your computer:
  4. Perform a disk cleanup:
  5. Install Windows updates:
  6. Restart your computer.
  7. Download the CenturyLink Installer again.
Tip: If you've already installed Norton and only need the latest security updates, you can download them using the Intelligent Updater Tool.

Remove old, conflicting software

Old files can conflict with a new download. Be sure all previous versions of Norton have been removed from your computer. (Your computer thinks you already have the software so it's confused why you want -- what it perceives to be -- a second copy.) Search the Internet for detailed instructions that are specific to your operating system.

Manage a potential infection

If you don't have any old copies of Norton on your computer (or have already removed them and continue to have problems), you might have a virus or malware on your computer that's interfering with your Norton installation.

To get around this, follow these steps:

  1. Restart your computer.
  2. At the startup screen, press F8.
  3. Select Safe Mode.
  4. Install Norton.
  5. Restart your computer (normally).
  6. Scan your system for viruses and malware.
  7. Remove any threats Norton recommends.

When you're done installing and activating Norton, read "Keep your computer healthy with PC diagnostic and security scans," which talks about viruses and how to protect yourself.
