Ways to block unwanted calls from your home phone

There are several ways you can control who gets through to your landline home phone.

Anonymous Call Rejection

Anonymous Call Rejection is included when you subscribe to Caller ID. When it's activated, Anonymous Call Rejection blocks ANONYMOUS and PRIVATE calls. So, for instance, if someone calls your home from a blocked number, he hears a message:

The party you are calling does not accept blocked calls. If you are calling from a blocked number, please hang up, pick up the receiver, press*87 and redial the phone number. When you do this, your name and number will appear for this call only.

You can turn Anonymous Call Rejection ON or OFF any time you want.  

Anonymous Call Rejection only blocks ANONYMOUS and PRIVATE calls. Because they lack the necessary data to be blocked, OUT OF AREA, UNAVAILABLE, UNKNOWN or NOT PROVIDED calls will still ring through to your home.

Block specific numbers

When your CenturyLink phone service includes the Call Rejection feature, you can avoid calls from specific phone numbers by creating a "block list." When a blocked caller tries to ring your phone, a pre-recorded message says you're not accepting calls.

To turn on or update your list:

  1. Listen for a dial tone and press .
  2. Follow the recorded instructions, and enter the phone numbers of callers you want to reject.

Not sure of the caller's number? You can activate call rejection immediately after you get a call from that person. Just hang up, then lift the receiver again, press and follow the recorded instructions. 

If your blocked list is full, you must erase a number before you can add another.

To turn off call rejection:

Press . If that doesn't work, try .

Note: This feature works with most local and some long distance numbers. In most cases, long distance and wireless calls can't be rejected by the Call Rejection feature.

National Do Not Call Registry

You should consider placing your number on the National Do Not Call Registry, managed by the Federal Trade Commission, to stop most telemarketer calls. Once your number has been on the list for 31 days, telemarketers should stop calling you. If they don't, file a complaint online.

Note: The Do Not Call registry only stops telemarketing calls -- that is, those that solicit sales of goods or services. So, you may still receive calls on behalf of political organizations, charities and telephone surveyors. You may also receive calls from companies that you have purchased products from within the last 18 months or those to whom you've provided express agreement in writing to receive their calls. However, if you ask a company to place your number on its own do-not-call list, it must honor your request. Just keep a record of the date you made the request.
